c. Axial deflection. The maximum stress on a ring, which is subjected to a
uniform twisting moment, is a tensile stress that occurs at the inner corner of the
ring. This stress makes the ring have a tendency to grow in diameter and become
dished. This moment is caused when the compressive yield strength of the groove
material is exceeded as illustrated in Figure 2.
